Marie Céline by le jacobin noir

‘Pagne noir’ is our first capsule. This collection marks the beginning of HYbride Studio, my research into the Ivorian archives and my quest for identity centred on my mixed heritage. I have reworked the cuts and designs I found in my grandmother’s wardrobes and in the Ivorian National Archives, giving them a contemporary twist and using a fabric that held great significance in my creative process: the black loincloth sold by Apollonian women (an ethnic group within the Akan) at the Treichville market.

Marie Céline is wearing a full black loincloth set, the 'Complet'. The black strapless top matches the poppy skirt.

I wanted to create pieces designed for everyday wear, in which you feel comfortable yet well-dressed. The black color gives them a classy, confident look, and the sheen of the fabric adds a touch of femininity.

Clothes can be worn in several ways. Here, Marie Céline is wearing the froufrou skirt as a dress.

One design, two ways to wear it.

Our garments are handmade in our workshops in Abidjan. It was important to me to create a healthy and sustainable environment for the brand, and to collaborate and grow alongside local stakeholders. In Côte d’Ivoire, we have a culture of tailoring. There are tailors on every street corner. Both women and men buy their own fabrics, come up with a design and go to their tailor to have it made. It is this tradition that I wanted to incorporate into my own production process. Working hand in hand, we have created a new way of producing premium ready-to-wear clothing, and we are proud to share this adventure together.
